Cruise the Caribbean
On Ocean Princess
Christmas 2014
For our annual Christmas cruise we choose the beautiful small ship Ocean Princess. She is just the right size for us, and did an intinerary that is a little bit different than the usual Caribbean cruise. This was a trip for relaxation and enjoyment, and we only booked a few shore excursions of special interest instead of trying to do something on every island. We traveled with our longtime friend and traveling companion Pam. One of the first things we did was to book dinner at Sabatini's. This is always a treat on Princess.
We made the usual stop at St. Thomas. Of course the ladies had to go ashore and shop. Next was St. Barts. We had a chance to sample the local drinks on this beautiful island.
On the island of St. Kitts we went to a beautiful old plantation house for a Caribbean cooking demonstration. It included little green bananas and local beer. We also had a cooking demonstration on the ship. Well, actually it was more of a comedy duo consisting of the Maitre D' and the Executive Chef. They put on a great act and actually produced some good food among the foolery. The audience loved it.
The next stop was Trinidad. These dancers on stilts known as jumbies greeted us at the port. Our great guide Ricardo from Tours by Locals showed us the architecture and scenery of this beautiful island.
The highlight of the tour was when he arranged for us to visit a Pan Yard, where the steel drums are stored and the musicians practice. We were treated to an impromptu performance by an up and coming young drummer.
The ship was nicely decorated for Christmas. This gingerbread village graced the lobby. One of the first things we had done after boarding was to sign up for the Master Chef's Dinner. The charge is not inexpensive but it is a great experience. It began with a tour of the galley led by the Headwaiter. The chefs had prepared caviar and champagne for us.
We moved on to the dining venue and the Executive Chef presented each course, accompanied by selected wines. A chocolate fantasy dessert finished the dining experience.
Christmas aboard the Ocean Princess was truly a delight.
